Almost everyone I talk to feels overwhelmed at some point in their essential oil journey. I have too. Where to start? How to use them? When to use them? Which ones to use? With over 600 essential oils products available, it becomes a lot of information to consume.

Even today, two years in, I have moments where I feel lost. When I am at that place, I often find myself coming back to these 10 simple essential oils tips to abide by:

10 Essential Oils Tips for Beginners

#1 Keep them in place where you can see them

My oils are in areas I frequent daily like my bathroom, my kitchen sink and my kids room. Having those reminders helps me incorporate them into my daily regime. Click here, here and here to see some of my favorite ways to store them.

#2 Move them away from the sun

Have you ever wondered why all essential oils are in an amber bottle? It is because they are effected by light and more specifically direct sunlight. Put them in an area that is shaded BUT also in a place that isn’t hidden. For example, I put my oils in my bathroom drawer next to my makeup. This is a cool place direct out of sunlight.

#3 Experiment

Use oils in different ways on different areas of your body. Don’t get stuck doing the same thing over and over but allow yourself to explore new avenues of using the oil. If you rub Marjoram on your wrists every morning because it helps calm you, maybe try rubbing it behind your ears?

#4 Use daily

Oils should be included into your daily regime not just when you have an issue. This is more of a proactive rather than reactive regime. To help you incorporate them, I have created 8 days of diffuser blends to not only help you practice incorporating them into your daily regime but also to help you experiment with different recipes.

#5 Buy a reference guide

The best way to dive right in is to have something that you can reference all the time to help you better understand which ways you can incorporate essential oils. Here is the one I keep on hand at all times.

#6 Don’t blend blends

A blend is a combination of many single oils. For example, lemon, orange and tangerine are all considered single oils but you can mix them together to get a blend called Citrus Fresh. Blending blends together isn’t a best practice because often they don’t work synergistically. Instead, consider “Blend bumping” which means adding more of an essential oil single that is already used in the blend. Let’s say that I am going to put Stress Away into my diffuser. A way to bump that blend is to add a few more drops of Lavender because that essential oils single is already used in the Stress Away blend.

#7 1-2 drops per hour of diffusing

If your diffuser runs for 4 hours, then you should add 4-8 drops of oil. This is my favorite diffuser because it runs 12 hours at a time. I love mixing 6 drops of lemon and 6 drops of peppermint as a morning pick-me up.

#8 Buy a Starter Kit

Many essential oils companies, have created packages, at a discounted rate, to help you start your essential oil journey. Young Living’s Starter Kit includes the top 10 most popular essential oils which have hundreds of different applications making it a breeze to incorporate them into your life.

#9 Don’t touch the orface reducer (clear cap on top of bottle)

Your skin has dirt and other contaminants which can cause the oil, still left in the bottle, to go bad or rancid. Hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle and wait for a drop to come out. Even though oils don’t expire you can cause them to degrade by touching the orface reducer.

#10 Don’t be afraid

While oils are good for overall wellness, just putting oils on the bottom of your feet is a rookie mistake. If your shoulder isn’t feeling good, then putting it on your feet it isn’t going to work. My recommendation is to go slow which focus on one area to start using essential oils, master that area and then try something new. To hep you jump right in, make sure you download the 8 Days of Diffuser Recipes to help you master diffusing.

Getting Started

Overall, the themes are don’t be afraid, find different ways to incorporate them daily and have fun. The more you start using essential oils, the more familiar you will become with the way your body responds to them and their uses.
