Almost everyone I talk to feels overwhelmed at some point in their essential oil journey. I have too. Where to start? How to use them? When to use them? Which ones to use? With over 600 essential oils products available, it becomes a lot of information to consume.

Even today, two years in, I have moments where I feel lost. When I am at that place, I often find myself coming back to these 10 simple essential oils tips to abide by:

10 Essential Oils Tips for Beginners

#1 Keep them in place where you can see them

My oils are in areas I frequent daily like my bathroom, my kitchen sink and my kids room. Having those reminders helps me incorporate them into my daily regime. Click here, here and here to see some of my favorite ways to store them.

#2 Move them away from the sun

Have you ever wondered why all essential oils are in an amber bottle? It is because they are effected by light and more specifically direct sunlight. Put them in an area that is shaded BUT also in a place that isn’t hidden. For example, I put my oils in my bathroom drawer next to my makeup. This is a cool place direct out of sunlight.

#3 Experiment

Use oils in different ways on different areas of your body. Don’t get stuck doing the same thing over and over but allow yourself to explore new avenues of using the oil. If you rub Marjoram on your wrists every morning because it helps calm you, maybe try rubbing it behind your ears?

#4 Use daily

Oils should be included into your daily regime not just when you have an issue. This is more of a proactive rather than reactive regime. To help you incorporate them, I have created 8 days of diffuser blends to not only help you practice incorporating them into your daily regime but also to help you experiment with different recipes.

#5 Buy a reference guide

The best way to dive right in is to have something that you can reference all the time to help you better understand which ways you can incorporate essential oils. Here is the one I keep on hand at all times.

#6 Don’t blend blends

A blend is a combination of many single oils. For example, lemon, orange and tangerine are all considered single oils but you can mix them together to get a blend called Citrus Fresh. Blending blends together isn’t a best practice because often they don’t work synergistically. Instead, consider “Blend bumping” which means adding more of an essential oil single that is already used in the blend. Let’s say that I am going to put Stress Away into my diffuser. A way to bump that blend is to add a few more drops of Lavender because that essential oils single is already used in the Stress Away blend.

#7 1-2 drops per hour of diffusing

If your diffuser runs for 4 hours, then you should add 4-8 drops of oil. This is my favorite diffuser because it runs 12 hours at a time. I love mixing 6 drops of lemon and 6 drops of peppermint as a morning pick-me up.

#8 Buy a Starter Kit

Many essential oils companies, have created packages, at a discounted rate, to help you start your essential oil journey. Young Living’s Starter Kit includes the top 10 most popular essential oils which have hundreds of different applications making it a breeze to incorporate them into your life.

#9 Don’t touch the orface reducer (clear cap on top of bottle)

Your skin has dirt and other contaminants which can cause the oil, still left in the bottle, to go bad or rancid. Hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle and wait for a drop to come out. Even though oils don’t expire you can cause them to degrade by touching the orface reducer.

#10 Don’t be afraid

While oils are good for overall wellness, just putting oils on the bottom of your feet is a rookie mistake. If your shoulder isn’t feeling good, then putting it on your feet it isn’t going to work. My recommendation is to go slow which focus on one area to start using essential oils, master that area and then try something new. To hep you jump right in, make sure you download the 8 Days of Diffuser Recipes to help you master diffusing.

Getting Started

Overall, the themes are don’t be afraid, find different ways to incorporate them daily and have fun. The more you start using essential oils, the more familiar you will become with the way your body responds to them and their uses.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed with the idea of start to live a greener life? If that’s the case, you are not alone. I often hear from people that they do not know where to start or get lost with all the information available to them. I get it because I was there and at times still feel a little lost.

When Did Going Green Become Popular?

While there is debate on when the green movement actually started, the modern movement became popular in the 1970’s with Rachel Carson’s best selling book Silent Spring. The green movement stems around the idea of environmentalism or being kind and protecting our earth. With the insurgent of chemicals into our products, global warming and increase in disease many are becoming more mindful about the products they use and come in contact with.

Taking the Next Steps

If you are new to this journey, I encourage you to not give up. An easy place to start is by focusing on one area in your home like your kitchen, your make-up or food. One mantra I keep in the back of my mind is “ditch and switch one product at a time”. There is not pressure to be perfect which is why I continually tell people the goal is to live life less toxic.

To make things even easier, I have created this checklist to help you get started. It is packed with over 40 different ways to jump start your green living journey focusing on cleaning, personal care products, your kitchen, things for your kids + so much more. #2 Get Rid of Candles and Air Fresheners
A common staple in the home but loaded with toxic chemicals such as phthaltes and benzene.

#3 Avoid “Antibacterial” Labels
This scam to provide a cleaner home has lead to a massive increase in antibiotic resistance.

#4 Minimize Use of Plastic
Buy glass storage containers for your food, stainless steel water bottles and wooden toys for your kids.

#5 Shop eco-friendly products and look for green certification.
Put your money where your mouth is and start supporting companies that support you and your health.

#6 Buy Energy Efficient Appliances
Using smarter technology can help reduce waste and save energy.

#7 Ditch Canned Food
Many canned food products contain Bisphenol-A (BPA), a common chemical known to be a hormone disrupting chemical linked to things like breast cancer.

#8 Reduce the number of product you put on your skin
By simply using less and avoiding contact with items can significantly reduce your body burden.

Top 5 Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes for Your Entire Home

Top 5 Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes for Your Entire Home

Cleaning products are loaded with toxic chemicals. Why? Because using naturally-based ingredients are more expensive but not using them can also come with very dangerous consequences for our health. See these 5 Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes for your entire home. Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes  Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes

A home should be a place of refuge, a place where you and your loved ones feel comfortable, protected and happy. At the core of this is a sense of safety and security, an environment of peace that comes from knowing your home is filled with people and products that you trust.

With so many under-regulated and misleading household cleaning products on the market, knowing what is safe and what isn’t is overwhelming. But I’m here to reassure you that a sparking clean home doesn’t require harsh chemicals. In fact, those chemicals may leave behind residue that is even more harmful than a little soap scum.

Toxic Chemicals Found In Our Cleaning Products

Toxic chemicals can be found in all sort of cleaning products around our home. Because we breath them in, touch them and exposure our bodies multiple times a day to many different chemicals it is important to understand what is in your cleaning products. Below are some common chemicals found in cleaning products:

Phthalates: found in any product that comes with fragrance listed as an ingredient such as air fresheners, dish soaps, laundry soaps, etc.
Triclosan: said to help with anti-bacterial properties, this ingredient is mainly found in soaps
QUATS: found in fabric softeners and household cleaners
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Laureth Sulfate: household clenaers, dishwashing detergent, toilet bowl cleaners (read more for a full list)

Why Does It Matter?

While no one can avoid exposure to all toxic chemicals, you do have the power to significantly reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals by using toxin free cleaning recipes and products. But why should you care so much about using toxin free alternatives? Because your health matters.

As a young 27-year-old, I thought I was immune to many chronic sickness, illnesses and diseases. As a matter of fact, I was incredibly intentional about by food choices, daily exercise and using natural alternatives for my home. But when my body started to fail me while pregnant (read more here) I took a closer look at my life.

After delivering my daughter 9 weeks early, I had plenty of time in the NICU to research the cause of my body malfunction which was incredibly concerning given the fact that I had successfully carried two previous pregnancy past term. The more I research the more I learned that I was a victim of “greenwashing“. I was duped and mislead by many of these companies that claimed to be healthy, natural and safe for my home.

In reality not only were they using toxic products, these toxic products are linked to things like diabetes, asthma, infertility, reproductive issues, thyroid issues and so much more. My body was failing because I put my health in the hands of someone who didn’t really care.

So Now What?

The good news is that you don’t have to give up your health to have a clean home. You can take control of your health by making a few changes. One change would be to vote with your dollar. There is an ever-increasing number of effective cleaning solutions that don’t include toxic ingredients. Using the Environmental Working Group’s Healthy Guide to cleaning can help you purchase products from companies that make eco-friendly and naturally derived solutions, supporting a world where humans and nature live together in harmony – the way it was meant to be!

A second alternatives would be to take full control into your own hands, skip the label reading all together and make the cleaning solution yourself! You can make many easy DIY formulas from ingredients you probably already have in your pantry from vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils.

Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes

I love incorporating essential oils into all my cleaning recipes because not only do they illicit a beautiful smell, they have the ability to boost our immunity, manage our emotions and unlock many other benefits in our body. They are a toxin free alternative to so much in our home.
