7 Secrets the Beauty Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know

7 Secrets the Beauty Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know

Think your foundation won’t give you cancer. Or that your lotion is protecting your skin? Guess again. The beauty industry is not protecting you and me. Find out the 7 secrets the beauty industry doesn’t want you to know. 7 secrets the beauty industry doesn’t want you to know 7 secrets the beauty industry doesn’t want you to know 7 secrets the beauty industry doesn’t want you to know

Growing up in a conservative home, I wasn’t allowed to wear make-up until I became a teenager. Even at 12, I was limited to eye-shadow and mascara. Because of the limits my mother put on me, I enjoyed experimenting with eye-shadows from blues, brown, purples, pinks and more. Beauty products are one of my favorite items to experiment with because of the vast amount of color options and thousands of looks you can achieve with different combinations.

To achieve these looks, I use to be a very loyal member of Sephora and their “Beauty Insider” rewards program, loving the freebies I would get after spending hundreds of dollars. As I got older, Sephora was my go to for mascara, lip gloss, blush, eye liners, perfumes and so much more. But I didn’t realize that those products I become so familiar with were effecting my body in negative ways.

The beauty industry does not do a good job protecting the public from harmful chemicals and toxins. It actually is a trade secret to hide chemicals in the labels with familiar words like “fragrance”. After realizing the harm it was causing my body, I became an advocate for chemical free products. Here is a list of 7 secrets the beauty industry hides from unsuspecting shoppers like you and me.

#1 Hypoallergenic doesn’t mean anything

Often used to describe products that are “safe for sensitive skin”, this claim can be misleading. Currently, there are no federal regulations around the term “hypoallergenic” or governed definitions. Hypoallergenic can mean different things to different companies.

#2 Organic – a false claim

Like the term “hypoallergenic”, the cosmetic industry’s term “organic” is not regulated. This could include irrelevant statements like “CFC-free” when CFC’s are actually banned by law. Even worse, companies are culprits of “Greenwashing” which include hidden trade-offs, no proof, vagueness, false labels, irrelevance, lesser of two evils, lying and selective greenwashing. Read more about it here.

#3 Majority of products are not safe

Approximately 1,400 harmful chemicals have been banned in the European Union known to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive harm and birth defects. How many does the U.S. ban? 30.

#4 Your lipstick is contaminated

A 2012 FDA study found 400 shades of lipstick contained traces of lead. While traces might sound promising; imagine the hidden ingredients in all your other products mounting up to be an overwhelming number of chemicals.

#5 May contain carcinogens

With the recent Johnson & Johnson law suit payout of $110 million dollars, many are wondering how long their bodies have endured dangerous ingredients.

which includes the top 12 dangerous chemicals found in your cosmetics

#6 If it smells good it probably is a chemical s*** storm

Companies are not legally bound to disclose the chemical make-up of “fragrance” which could contain 100’s of chemicals. Fragrance is considered a “trade-secret”.

#7 Unscented could be MORE harmful than you think

Unscented products usually have very little smell because fragrant agents have been added to reduce or even mask the potency of the toxic chemicals. Look for fragrance free products which means no artificial or synthetic fragrances have been added.

For chemical and toxin free make-up, look to the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database to find healthier alternatives. My favorite brand is the Savvy Mineral Cosmetic line because of the money I get back for every purchase and FREE products I get for being a loyal shopper (just like Sephora). PRODUCT REVIEW: Young Living Savvy Minerals Lip Gloss (ABUNDANT)

PRODUCT REVIEW: Young Living Savvy Minerals Lip Gloss (ABUNDANT)

Young Living just joined force with Savvy Minerals an all natural, chemical free make-up company. Savvy Minerals thinks women do not have to compromise when it comes to beauty and I have to agree. Creating products with the highest quality ingredients and products people love, they are out to empower women. I was slightly skeptical about their no compromising claim because I spent 5 years looking for the perfect lip gloss . Watch to see my product review of Young Living Savvy Minerals Lip Gloss (Abundant).

Provides sheer to medium coverage

I love this application because it is a natural sheer look with light to medium coverage. Some of the other lip glosses I’ve tried feel as though I am caking my lips with sticky frosting. This goes on smooth for a natural look.

Moisturizes the lips

Living in Denver, I am always on the look-out for something that will help my chapped dry lips. Applying multiple times a day helps to soften my cracked lips.

No Chemicals – only all natural ingredients

This Savvy Minerals lip gloss is made without parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, bismuth, talc, synthetic fragrances and synthetic colors. These chemicals are know to cause hormone imbalances, reproductive issues and lead to cancer. Don’t get stuck with the junk!

Great Color

Before switching to a chemical free lip gloss, I wanted to make sure that I found a similar color that also added shine. Abundant is a great all natural sheer color that adds a soft shine to my lips. My lips can go from a fresh, natural day look to a nice shine for the evening.

Affordable Price

Retail price is $36.18 and Members pay $27.50. This lip gloss should last me about 5 to 6 months which means I should only have to buy this twice each year. Additionally, when becoming a Young Living member, you can receive money back for every purchase and free products along the way…just like Sephora except without all the chemicals. Win, win!

13 Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen Lotion Answered Questions

13 Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen Lotion Answered Questions

I know lots of people are excited about Young Living’s newest product, their Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, but also have tons of questions. So I am here to help answer them and prove why this is the best sunscreen on the market today for kids and adults!

#1 What ingredients does it include?

Buriti Fruit Oil

– comes from a palm tree found in Brazil
– found in many skin care products, self-tannin products and sensitive skin care products

Raspberry Seed Oil

2000 study found that Raspberry Seed Oil is a natural sun protector

Ucuuba Nut Butter

– know to help nourish dry, irritated skin
– maintain youthful appearance

Essential Oils

– Helichrysum
– Carrot Seed
– Frankincense
– Lavender
– + More

#2 What ingredients does it not include?

Synthetic Preservatives
Synthetic Fragrances
Synthetic Dyes

If you want to learn more about the negative effects of these ingredients, google “dangers of xxx” to learn more.

#3 Why is this only SPF 10?

When tested, the product came back as an SPF 10. But let’s look at the science behind SPF. Below is a chart that shows SPF coverage and protection against the UVB rays. SPF 10 = 90% protection against the UVB rays, SPF 15 = 93.3%, SPF 30 = 96.7%, so the differences are negligible.

#4 What does SPF stand for?

Sun Protection Factor that calculates or measures how well the product protects your skin from the sun or the UVB rays. It does not measure UVA protection.

#5 What is the difference between UVA and UVB?

UVA rays have more long term damage to the skin like premature aging. UVB rays are what cause sunburns. So make sure that you have a sunscreen that protects again both.

#6 Does Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen Lotion protect against both UVA and UVB?

$7 Is it water-resistant and sweat-proof?

Yes, it is both water-resistant and sweat-proof up to 80 minutes.

#8 How often should you reapply it?

There is no exact answer because everyone’s skin is very different. My son was born a towhead with extremely light hair and a fair complexion. My dad on the other hand has a nice olive skin tone because his family comes from the Mediterranean area. He rarely has to apply sunscreen through-out the day because of his complexion.

A great way to calculate your application throughout the day is by calculating how many minutes it typically takes your skin to burn (with out any protection) and multiply by the SPF that you are applying. For example, I usually burn in 15-20 minutes. I am blessed because I have a mixture of my mother’s fair skin and my dad’s olive complexion. My calculation would look like this:

20 minutes to burn X 10 (SPF for Young Living Mineral Sunscreen Lotion) = 200 minutes

That means I would need to reapply every 200 minutes, or every 3 hours and 20 minutes. Now, this is a general rule of thumb and I actually apply about every 2 hours because we live in the Mile-High City which means we are closer to the sun than most people are. The good news is, the application won’t be too overbearing.

#9 Can you use this product on children?

Yes, you can use on children 6 months an older. They do not recommend applying to younger babies because it actually has not been tested on children under 6 months of age. This is an industry standard and found on other common sunscreen brands. Two of my other top recommendations, since Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen lotion is out-of-stock, are Think Baby and BabyGanics Sunscreen Stick. Both have good ratings on the Environmental Working Group’s website.

#10 I know it does not include nano-particles but why should I care?

Nano-particles literally means a nano sized particles or an incredible small sized particle. 100,000 nano-particles can be found in the width of one strand of hair. VERY TINY particles. Nano-particles are used in sunscreens because they “smallness” helps the sunscreen absorb into your skin that you don’t get a white, pasty look. They are so small that they can easily be found in your bloodstream and in our cells. Even if you are using a “natural” product that contains zinc oxide it might still contain nano-particles. Since there have been no studies on nano-particles we do not know the long term health effects they have on our body.

#11 If Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen Lotion does not contain nano-particles, how does it apply to the skin?

It is a lightweight formal that applies in a sheer application. Young Living coats the zinc oxide with Jojoba esters to help with skin absorption. Jojoba esters are used in many cosmetics such as lipsticks, shampoos and moisturizing lotions.

#12 Is the product gluten, vegan and vegetarian certified?

It contains no wheat derived ingredients but has not been tested or certified to be gluten free. It is vegetarian but not considered vegan because it contains beeswax.

#13 How do I know what sunscreens and good and bad?

I use the Environmental Working Group’s website to help me rate products. Click this link for more resources on sunscreens available today.

3 Reasons Why You Should Start Using Essential Oils

3 Reasons Why You Should Start Using Essential Oils

Toxins and chemicals = bad. Toxins and chemicals led to my extremely high-risk pregnancy. Toxins and chemicals = harm to every part of your body. Toxins and chemical almost killed my daughter. Be free of the fear of toxin and chemicals. Essential oils saved us and can save you too. Here’s why….

#1 The Facts Are Startling

Getting ready for some cringe worthy stats.

Household Toxins

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health conducted a study that looked at 2,983 ingredients in the home. Of those ingredients:

  • 884 were considered toxic ingredients
  • 314 caused biological mutations
  • 218 caused reproductive issues
  • 146 were known to cause cancer

Did you know….there are no federal regulations of chemicals in household products. That means there are no standards, no testing, no data, no notification for products in the marketplace. And that means no one is watching out for us.

Cancer Is Under Our Control

According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 3 cases of cancer is directly linked to poor diet, physical inactivity, poor weight or chemical exposure. ONLY 5% to 10% of cancer is caused by gene defect. That means 90% to 95% of cancer is under our control. Managing what we eat, what we bring into our home and what we put on our bodies can help us all.

Stress Can Kill You

Beth Greer, author of Super Natural Home, lived a very similar lifestyle to me managing her weight and eating mostly organic food thinking this was enough. Admittedly, her life was chaotic and stressful which she believes caused her cancer. After re-evaluate her entire life from what she was eating, to personal-care products all the way to the environment she was living in, she made a change, one of which was using Essential Oils.

But why does it have to take a medical crisis for Beth to change or for me to change? DO NOT WAIT TO MAKE A CHANGE! In waiting there is pain, there is suffering and heartache. By making the change now you can protect yourself and I am here to help.

Reproductive Issues

In a 2003, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Harvard School of Public Health conducted a study that found men who had higher traces of phthalate in their blood had reduced sperm count and poor sperm quality. Toxins and chemicals = reproductive issues

A Great Resource

Check-out the Environmental Working Group . Their mission is to “empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment” through breakthrough research and education. A mission statement like that is hard to beat. Who doesn’t want to live a healthier life? My favorite section is the Consumer Guides that rate common household products based on their toxin levels. My aunt introduced me to this group after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She opted not to go through with chemo and instead reevaluate her toxin and chemical levels using this website as a guide.

#2 Starting at Home is Easy & Simple

When I first heard about Essential Oils, I thought people using them were a little crazy, granola or hippy. Those are limiting stereotypes. In all actuality, people who use Essential Oils are progressive, educated and looking for alternatives. As Derek Henry from the Healing the Body says, “when you are called ‘extreme’ for going natural, and ‘poison’ is considered normal, you might just need a new tribe”. Below are some options for natural, not poisonous, options:

Replacing Household Items

You can replace almost everything in your home with Essential Oil infused – TOXIC AND CHEMICAL FREE – products (that are already made – not DIY versions):

All purpose cleaner
Window & Glass cleaner
Dishwashing Detergent
Laundry Detergent
Dish and Hand Soap
Hand Sanitizer
Disinfecting Wipes
Floor cleaner
Bath & Shower Gel
17 different products formulated just for kids
Make-up – one of my personal favorites
Insect Repellent
Anti-aging cream
Pet Products
Items for muscle aches

toxin free make-up

These are items free of:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)
Synthetic Perfumes/Fragrance (Phthalates)another article
Quats “Anti-bacterial”
Optical Brighteners

Harmful, not Helpful

Not only do these products get rid of harmful, nasty stuff in your home, they help support your immunity. Even more, Essential oils support your skeletal, muscular, circulatory, endocrine,  and respiratory  systems. They help support your hormones and your reproductive systems. They help support a healthy weight. They help with your brain health and emotions. I don’t know any of my household cleaners or products that help support my respiratory system. I do know some (bleach) that harm my respiratory system.

If you are struggling with any of the areas listed above, stop, reevaluate and reach out to me for more information.

#3 They are Practical & Affordable

I like Essential Oils because they are practical and affordable.

They are practical for these reasons:

  • Get money back with every purchase
  • Receive Loyalty Gifts for consecutive purchases at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months
  • Easy, convenient ordering
  • One-stop shopping for everything you need in your home
  • Front-door delivery
  • Toxin and Chemical free living

They are affordable because:

  • Average cost is about $10 to $30 a bottle
  • It takes about 1 to 3 drops per application
  • Bottles come in two sizes: 5ML (90 drops) and 15ML (250 drops)

This means that for each application the average cost of an Essential Oil is around $0.06 to $0.15 which is truly affordable.
