There is an old saying that goes “you get what you pay for” which basically means that high quality products give you high rewards. Buying from discount retailers, big box stores or one-off vendors can offer a cost savings but with that savings, you will receive added pesticides, fillers and other toxic chemicals in your Essential Oils. Knowing which brand and products to buy can be challenging but most important is to learn where your oils come from.

WHY SHOULD I CARE?

Investing in a company that offers pure Essential Oils gives you the comfort knowing that you are not overloading your body with toxins it does not know how to handle leading to health complications like asthma, allergies, diabetes, infertility, cancer and other chronic illnesses (read more here). Essential Oils represent a very small amount of the overall plant composition – roughly 1 to 5 percent – requiring an incredibly large amount of effort and plant material to produce just on bottle of essential oil.

Think of it this way…it takes 242,000 rose petals to get 5ML of rose oil. Nearly 3,000 lemons are needed to distill 2 pounds of lemon essential oil and it takes 3 pounds of lavender flowers just to produce 15ML of lavender essential oil.

Given the fact that Essential Oils are highly concentrated (as mentioned above) investing in true, pure Essential Oils and Essential Oil based products gives you comfort knowing you are not putting 2 pounds of pesticides, synthetic ingredients or other toxic chemicals on your body. Plus, most applications use 1 to 3 drops or roughly $0.06 to $0.015 per application.

HOW I CHOOSE MY ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential Oils interest has quadulped since 2014 leading to many new entrants in the market [1]. When choosing the company I buy Essential Oils from, I look at a number of factors.

  1. 100% TOXIN FREE – Young Living is the ONLY Essential Oil company that controls the entire Essential Oil process from buying their land “virgin”, or 100% free of pesticides, planting, weeding by hand, distilling and bottling. This is an important distinction because no fillers or synthetic chemicals are ever added to their oils unlike ALL other brands. Because Essential Oils are highly concentrated versions of plants, I want to ensure that when I put them on my body I am not also putting highly concentrated versions of chemicals as well. The only other company I would ever consider purchasing my Essential Oils from would be DoTerra. Unfortunately, DoTerra does not exercise the same controls that Young Living does. While they do have certain testing protocols they are simply re-bottling from other sources and cannot always be 100% sure their products are free of toxic chemicals.
  2. REWARDS FOR PURCHASES – When purchasing my products through Young Living, I get free products each month, money back on every purchase (10%-25% depending on how long you have been a customer of YL) and many other perks. Before I was buying from products from traditional retailers (Amazon, Grocery Store, Sephora) and not receiving the same rewards.
  3. ONE STOP SHOP – As a mother of 3 young children and a wife to a pilot, I do not want to spend my hours driving around town to pick-up all the toxin free products for my home. Thankfully, I order 90% of products from YL because of the vast variety of products they carry. Plus, it gets shipped directly to my door.
  4. 250+ PLANT-BASED PRODUCTS – Young Living carries the most Essential Oil products out of any other Essential Oil company. Because of their wide-selection, I am able to stock-up my home with many household basic with more opportunities to get rewarded. From an entire cleaning product line, make-up line, personal care line, supplements and more, I have more opportunities to get money back vs. other Essential Oil companies.

When making your final decision, search for products that go beyond organic and therapeutic-grade quality. Look for a company that does not outsource any part of their process and maintains entire control of the plants. Replacing chemicals with naturally derived ingredients should be done with care and rigor all the way down to where you source your oils from.

ESSENTIAL OIL PRODUCTS

For centuries, dynasties, societies and cultures used plants to help support their lives. Dating back to 4000 B.C. plants played a central role in India’s Ayurveda (medical) system. Hippocrates developed a system for diagnosing diseases & illnesses using plants and Cleopatra opened the very first salon using Essential Oil based products from Frankincense, Cypress and Myrrh [2].

It was not until the 1700’s and 1800’s that western society started relying more on conventional medicine and outlawing the practice of  herbalism unless it was practiced by a qualified doctor. Subsequently, plants and Essential Oils took a less pivotal role in our life where as chemicals, toxins and synthetics started playing a larger role.

As chronic sickness, illness and disease have increased (directly linked to chemicals) Essential Oil products have taken a large role in our society. Below are ways specific products and products lines that can be incorporated into your life.
